Before you start down any upgrade path, first determine whether you have a copy of the existing project, or, if not, whether you can extract the project from the existing HMI520. You may need to contact the OEM or System Integrator that originally created the project for assistance with this step. The cable needed to extract the program from the HMI is P/N 7431-0098A and is available by contacting our sales department. Please allow two days to build this custom cable. You can also build this cable yourself by following the hyperlinked cable part number above.

Once you have the project, you will need to convert it from EZware-500 to EBPro. We have a Tech Note to walk you through the process. If you are unable to obtain a copy of the project, you will need to re-create your project in EBPro.

All of our 7″ models are designed to fit into existing 5.7″ panel cutouts, no panel modification necessary.

Can I replace an HMI500 Series with a newer model?

Yes, an HMI500 Series can be replaced with a newer model.

If you have the HMI500 Series project file, it can be converted into an EBPro project. See Tech Note 5102, “Converting from EZware-500 to EBPro.”

I'm upgrading my HMI500 series HMI and I don't have a copy of the original project, the HMI is dead, what do I do now?

If you do not have a copy of the original project, you may need to reach out to the OEM or Systems Integrator who originally programmed the unit an find out if they have an upgrade path already created, or a copy of the original project files they are willing to share with you.

If you don’t know who the original programmer was, reach out to sales@maplesystems.com or 425-745-3229. If you can provide us with the serial number information, we can attempt to provide contact information if its available.

I'm upgrading my HMI500 series HMI, I've successfully extracted the project files from the unit. Now what do I do?

You’ll need to make sure you have Ezware-500, Ezware-5000, and EBPro loaded to your PC or laptop. They’re all free and downloadable from our Support Center. After that, follow Tech Note 5102 for instructions on how to upgrade your project from Ezware-500 to EBPro.

How long does it take to upgrade from Ezware-500 to EBPro?

It shouldn’t take long however, each project is different so its tough to put a time to it. For the most part, its as easy as:

  • Translate HMI500 EOB project file in Ezware-5000.
  • Select a model closest to the screen size of the destination HMI.
  • Compress the project in Ezware-5000.
  • Uncompress the project in EBPro and select the destination HMI.

I upgraded my HMI500 series to a new cMT HMI and I keep getting PLC No Response error. How do I get my comms working again?

If RS-232 Serial communications on COM1 were used in the original application, the pin out of the COM port has changed with the new cMT HMI. Pins 2 and 3 have been swapped and the gender has also changed. Purchasing a new serial cable specific to the new HMI is recommended. However, you can also purchase a null modem gender changer to be used on the HMI end of the cable.

I have an HMI500 Series unit and the screen is blank. I don't have a copy of the original project, but the HMI is still operating. Can I pull the program out of it?

Yes, but if its on an OEM machine, you may want to check with them before you do anything. They may have an upgrade path for you already.

You will need a special cable to extract the program, 7431-0098A. You can either build it yourself, or purchase one from us. Please allow for a 2 day lead time if you choose to purchase.

Converting HMI500 LibrariesWhen you use the Translate HM1500 Project option in EasyBuilder-5000 to convert a *.eob file, the Translate tool creates a new project file with a *.mtp extension and it also creates two new Library files that contain the graphics that were in the original *.eob file. It does not convert the original library files for EZware-500, but rather creates new library files with only the graphics used in the project. For example, if you start with a project called MyProject.eob the translated project will be called MyProject.mtp. In addition, it creates a shape library file called MyProject.plb and a picture library file called MyProject.fib When you compress the MyProject.mtp file in EasyBuilder-5000, the compressed file (My Project.cmp) contains the project file and the library files. When you uncompress the MyProject.cmp file in EBPro, the “MyProject” library files are saved into the EBPro/library folder.
