How do I know if I should setup my PLC or HMI as remote or local?

In the HMI configuration software, Local and Remote refer to the answer to this question:

“Am I going through another HMI besides this one to get PLC variables?”

  • If Yes, then the PLC is to be configured as a Remote PLC.
  • If No, then the PLC is a Local PLC for the purposes of the configuration software.

A remote connection is typically used when the first HMI is connected to the serial port on a PLC and you need to access the PLC with a second HMI through the same serial port.
