The leader in industrial automation and control solutions

Industry: Water & Wastewater Treatment
Location: Texas, USA

Baird Gilroy & Dixon (BG&D) specializes in Electrical Engineering for Water and Wastewater Treatment. This includes full-service planning and design, project management, design-build, EPC (engineering, procurement and construction), construction management, SCADA programming, and plant commissioning services.

The firm’s in-depth knowledge in critical infrastructure projects covers all aspects of electrical systems including power distribution, switchgear, automation controls and instrumentation, standby power, SCADA, and network communications. The firm has completed projects across Texas for various public and private water systems, utility districts, regional water authorities, and small to large municipalities.

The Problem

In a water treatment control room, BG&D’s customer had an older legacy panel PC that needed replacing. This legacy PC also had required several expensive touch screen replacements in its lifetime, adding to the frustrating downtime when the whole system had to be replaced for just a failed display. In addition, the control room has bad lighting and severe window glare that creates visibility problems on the old system’s display. In upgrading their hardware, the customer also needed to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, as the old Windows XP was no longer serviceable.

The Solution

BG&D chose one of our powerful Industrial PCs (BPC2330A) to host the customer’s updated VTSCada application along with the latest Windows 10 OS. This solution allowed them to mount the PC inside the cabinet and have one of our Industrial Monitors (MON1015APH) mounted on the door of the cabinet.

Choosing a two-piece solution allows the customer the option of replacing just the touch monitor if the display became damaged, as this was a frustrating maintenance issue for the customer in the past. This maximizes uptime for the PC application and is a quick and easy cost effective replacement of the display if needed.

These control rooms can allow for a nasty screen glare when the door to the room is open and the sun is at the right angle. The high brightness monitors resolve that issue.

Jon-Paul Dixon, Principal at BG&D, LLC

The Maple monitor was chosen for its 1000nit high brightness, enabling better viewing in the difficult bright control room setting, and the display fit easily into the old panel cutout with little modification.
