Summary
When troubleshooting an issue occurring on a PC, it may be helpful to view the system logs to collect more information about the source of a problem. This document describes how to view and save system logs on a PC running the Windows 10 operating system.
Solution
1.
Open the Windows Event Viewer utility. This can be done in multiple ways:
a.
Search for “Event Viewer” in the Windows search bar.
b.
Open a command prompt and enter the command “EVENTVWR”, then press <ENTER>
c.
Right-click on the Start menu button in the taskbar, then select “Event Viewer” from the list.
d.
If the user does not have access to Windows Explorer, they can use the Task Manager to run the Event Viewer task.
i.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and select Task Manager.
ii.
Open the FILE menu and select “Run new task”
iii.
Enter “EVENTVWR” into the field and press <ENTER>

Event Viewer will now be displayed. The pane on the left can be used to navigate and display different types of log files that the system collects. Folders in this list can be expanded to show their contents.

Select a log from the list to display. Logged events will be displayed in the top middle section of the window. When selected, a detailed description of the event will be displayed below.

To save an entire event log for future reference, select the log you want to save, then open the Action menu at the top of the Event Viewer window. Select “Save all events…” from the menu. Specific events can be saved by selecting them in the event list, then selecting “Save selected events…” from the Action menu.

By default, Event log files will be saved with the .EVTX, .EVT, or .ETL file extensions, and can be viewed later in the Event Viewer by selecting “Open Saved Log…” from the Action menu.
