Summary
The “Destination Host Unreachable” message can occur in a network topology due to several common issues. These include incorrect VLAN configurations, IP addressing conflicts, and switchport misconfigurations. This technical note outlines the most frequent causes, how to diagnose them, and recommended steps to resolve the issue.
Note: USB NICs may not support VLAN Tagging.
Solution
Incorrect VLAN Configuration
Note: Only change Windows network adapter VLAN settings if PC is not having traffic tagged by the switch already.
1.
Identify the Network Interface Card Description name of the device that is not communicating but is connected to the network. This information can be found inside the Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connection.

2.
Open the Device Manager application and expand the Network Adapters column.
3.
Find the same Network Interface Card Description name, then double click the Network Adapter.

4.
Navigate to the Advanced tab, then scroll down and select Priority & VLAN.

5.
Ensure Priority & VLAN Enabled or VLAN Enabled is set.
6.
Scroll down and select VLAN ID. Then check the box above Not Present and insert the correct VLAN ID.

7.
Perform this action on both and/or all IPCs that are experiencing a Destination Host Unreachable when pinging via the command prompt.
IP Addressing Conflicts
Note: DHCP will automatically resolve this issue if enabled on all devices. In the case of assigning a static IP to a device that has already leased an IP. The static IP will change to an APIPA address.
1.
Identify the Network Interface Card Description name of the IPCs that are currently not communicating but are connected to the network. This information can be found inside the Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connection.

2.
Double click the Network Adapter to enter its Status dialog menu, then click the Properties Button to enter its Properties dialog menu.
3.
Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to enter its properties dialog menu.

4.
Within the Use the Following IP address section, adjust the last octet up or down by a value of one until the issue is resolved.

Switchport Misconfiguration
1.
You can navigate to the Maple Managed Switch Graphic User Interface (GUI) by entering the switch’s IP address into a web browser (E.g., 192.168.0.254).
2.
For MapleLink switches, navigate to the Advanced Settings > VLAN > VLAN section.
3.
Ensure the edge node device’s ports are on the same VLAN.
Note: Member Ports should be assigned to the same Ports the edge nodes are connected to. The picture below shows that VLAN 1 can communicate with all six ports. VLAN 10 can only communicate with ports one through four. VLAN 20 can communicate on ports one and three through six.

4.
For MapleLink-Lite switches, navigate to the Security > VLAN section.
5.
Ensure the edge node device’s ports are on the same VLAN.
NOTE: Port number should be either assigned as a Trunk or Access role and assigned the same VLAN Tag ID. The picture below shows that a device connected on port 2 can communicate with any port on VLAN 1. A device connected to port 1 can communicate with VLAN 1, 10, and 20 devices.
